कर्म

Karma

Sanskrit meaning “action” or “cause & effect”

In the Buddhist tradition Karma refers to actions driven by intention (cetanā) leading to future consequences

At KARMAFREE, we believe in creating less karma by making responsible choices. But what does that really mean?

KARMAFREE was born from a deep questioning of how we create and consume, and the lasting impact these choices have on the environment. Too often, we buy products without considering their origins, the materials used, the people behind them, and their intentions.

Are we supporting those who protect the environment or those who harm it?

Our brand exists from an authentic desire to create in harmony with nature. We aim to inspire and show that it is possible to produce meaningfully and responsibly, with care for the planet, its oceans, its species, and its people.

At the height of the pandemic, organizing beach clean-ups wasn’t possible. So, they decided to simply do their part. Not knowing where to start, Uriel began collecting hundreds of washed up toothpaste tubes. One day he came home and said, “I’m clearing my karma for all the plastic toothpaste tubes I’ve used in my life. Let’s make art from these.” Jessica replied, “Or… let’s create a toothpaste that doesn’t come in plastic. We’ll call it KARMAFREE!”

Their alchemy skills weren’t quite up to creating a zero-waste toothpaste, but the name stuck. A year later, while Uriel was raising funds for a surf documentary, he asked Jessica to design a shirt for the screenings. She came up with two naturally dyed shirts one indigo, one green using organic materials.

The moment Uriel tried them on, something clicked. KARMAFREE was truly born.

With the encouragement of their Bali community, they launched a small collection of clothes for surfers. The core intention was to co-create with nature: to use natural, local resources and show that it’s possible to make beautiful, lasting pieces without harming the planet.

Since then, they’ve continued to explore how to create more sustainably using the abundant resources of Bali and its neighboring islands from natural dyes and eco-printing to organic fabrics and collaborating closely with Balinese families.
